Amsdell Brewery (Geo. I. Amsdell Brewing Co.)

1854 – 1920

The 1909 Sanborn (vol. 2, sheet 141) shows 'GEO. I. AMSDELL BREWING CO.' filling the Jay-to-Lancaster block from Dove St. westward. Its buildings include a malt house, a brew house, ice and cold storage, a cooper shop and a wagon shed. The sheet note reads 'NOT IN OPERATION' and adds that occupancy was to change after Jan. 1, 1909. OpenStreetMap tags 175 Jay St. as 'Knickerbocker Apartments;Amsdell Brewery', and the pin is that geocode. This resolves the 135-145 vs. 175 Jay dispute: the surviving building is 175 Jay. The 135-145 figures are most likely older house numbers (inference), because modern 135 Jay geocodes 150 m east, near Swan St., where the Sanborn shows rowhouses.
