Durham-born tallow chandler and War of 1812 army contractor who began brewing on 12 Oct 1822 with Lancelot Fidler. Built the Broadway & Arch brewery in 1851-52 on the model of London's Lion Brewery (capacity over 200,000 bbl), with depots in New York and Boston. Plaintiff in Taylor v. Delavan (lost, 1840); Mayor 1848-49; collected a 10,000-volume library. Death date disputed (15 Aug vs 13 Sept 1863).
